History of Hockey In India – An Overview

Hockey is the national game of India. Introduced by British Government, this game has a rich historic background. Soon after the introduction the game gained quick fame among the Indians. The first Indian hockey club was formed in year of 1885-86, in Kolkata. Immediately after this foundation, similar clubs have been formed in Mumbai and Punjab also. Although the desired fame throughout the world had come much later. In the year of 1928 India participated in Amsterdam Olympic. It was the first time the hockey team of India drew attention of the rest of the world. In the debut game, team India stunned everyone with a victory. However, it was just the beginning of an excellent future.

The continuation of the success

What started with a debut victory had continued for a long time. The years between 1928 and 1956 are considered as the golden days of Indian hockey. Between this time, India won six Olympic gold medals. Until the present day, this remains an unbreakable record.

Players of the golden age

Many legendary players played in the team during this time.  Players like Balbir Singh, Dhyan Chand, Dilip Tirkey, played for the Indian hockey team. Dhyan Chand had been the most regarded hero of Indian hockey. Even today, he remains the hero who had made the Indian hockey dream possible.

Post golden age

After the glory of golden age, the standard of Indian hockey had faced stagnation. It is not due to lack of talent or effort this downfall had occurred. Mainly, during this time many other teams like Pakistan, Germany, England and Australia had emerged out.

The future

India is trying its best to regain the lost glory. Efforts are being put everywhere to build a better hockey team. Even Shahrukh Khan starred movie like ‘Chak De’ has featured hockey. With time, the sport is becoming popular once again.
